About the Test

A simple blood test called QuantiFERON TB Gold aids in the identification of the tuberculosis-causing Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The QuantiFERON, often known as QFT, is an interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) that has replaced the tuberculin skin test in recent years (TST, PPD or Mantoux). A controlled laboratory test, unlike TST, the QuantiFERON TB Gold test is unaffected by prior Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) infection. Compared to the tuberculin skin test, the QuantiFERON TB Gold test is also more sensitive and specific.

Collecting blood from an artery is more painful than collecting from a vein, but complications are rare. You may have some bleeding, bruising, or soreness at the spot where the needle was put in. Also, you should avoid lifting heavy objects for 24 hours after the test."
