Free light chains are proteins made by plasma cells, an immune cell type. They are also referred to as kappa and lambda light chains. This blood test measures the quantity of kappa and lambda chains, or free light chains, in the bloodstream. In order to generate antibodies, the light chains typically join forces with the heavy chains (other proteins). The blood contains free light chains (FLC), which are immunoglobulins that have not been fully (intact) assembled.
