The prostate gland produces the glycoprotein known as prostate acid phosphatase. The heterogeneous array of isoenzymes that make up the acid phosphatase membrane are able to hydrolyze phosphate esters in an acidic media. For males undergoing radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, the prostatic acid phosphatase test provides clinically valuable prognostic information for predicting recurrence. Blood levels of PSA are assessed using the acid phosphatase test. Malignant or healthy prostate gland cells can both produce the protein known as PSA, or prostate-specific antigen. The test measures the enzyme level in blood serum using an acid phosphate assay kit.
