This test is straightforward, inexpensive, and quick with little discomfort for patients, but it is unusual because doctors only recommend it in specific situations. This is done to differentiate between different blistering situations. It can be used to find different types of cutaneous (skin) infections, particularly those that cause blistering. This is typically administered in emergency situations when a rapid diagnosis of herpes infection is required or to distinguish between Stevens- Johnson syndrome and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Due to the technique, this test may also yield false-positive or false-negative results in the early stages of disease. For accuracy, it is therefore advised to confirm these test results with a further biopsy or PCR (polymerase chain reaction).
