Red blood cells include inclusions called inz bodies, also known as Heinz-Ehrlich bodies, which are made of denatured haemoglobin. Although Heinz bodies are not apparent when stained with Romanowsky dyes, they do appear as tiny round inclusions within the red cell body. Supravital staining allows for a clearer visualisation of them (e.g., with new methylene blue, crystal violet or bromocresol green). Heinz bodies are created when the molecules that make up haemoglobin are harmed, typically by oxidant damage caused by medicines used or by a hereditary mutation (i.e. change of an internal amino acid residue).
