A test called Stool Reducing Substance is used to find unabsorbed sugar in the stool. With this test, sugars like fructose, glucose, lactose, and galactose can be found in the stool sample. The purpose of this test is often to determine lactose intolerance. Due to a compromised intestinal lining, lactose intolerance may develop following a protracted episode of viral gastroenteritis. This test helps to differentiate between diarrhoea brought on by a viral illness and diarrhoea brought on by the aberrant excretion of different sugars. If the test is positive, there are decreasing sugars in the faeces that the body has not yet digested.
