About the Test

This test calculates the level of the calcitonin hormone in the blood. The thyroid glands C cells secrete calciumtonin, which regulates how the body utilises calcium. A high level of calcitonin in the blood is a form of tumour marker and may indicate thyroid cancer.ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â This test is recommended if you have any of the following thyroid disease symptoms: a lump in the front of your neck, swollen lymph nodes, neck or throat pain, or difficulty swallowing. The calcitonin test is primarily used to identify C-cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid cancer, assess the effectiveness of treatment, and track thyroid cancer recurrence.

Collecting blood from an artery is more painful than collecting from a vein, but complications are rare. You may have some bleeding, bruising, or soreness at the spot where the needle was put in. Also, you should avoid lifting heavy objects for 24 hours after the test."
