The test for dengue antigen NS1, IgG, and IgM looks for the virus non-structural protein component (NS1) as well as the antibodies (IgG & IgM) the body produces in reaction to the infection. Within 3–4 days of a dengue infection, NS1 and IgM are produced into the blood and are detectable. Consequently, this test aids in the early detection and management of dengue illness. After the 14th day of infection, IgG antibodies start to manifest and last a lifetime. Early signs of dengue include a fast spike in temperature, extreme exhaustion, and flu-like symptoms. If the infection is not treated, it could develop into a serious condition like Dengue shock syndrome or Dengue hemorrhagic fever.
