An acute infectious diarrhoea is caused by bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, with bacteria typically being the leading suspects. In order to identify the bacterium causing diarrheal illness, culture is indicated. Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter jejunii, Pleisomonas spp., Yersinia spp., and Bacillus cereus are a few of the microorganisms that can cause diarrhoea. Candida species can be detected in cases of immunocompromised patients, while Clostridium difficile can also be the culprit in cases of extended antibiotic therapy. Additionally, some Escherichia coli species can also result in diarrhoea. However, viruses and protozoa cannot be isolated with this assay.
