A test called urine electrophoresis is used to find out if there are any proteins in the urine that shouldnt be there. In particular, the monoclonal immunoglobulin protein is tested to determine the kind of protein. A midstream urine sample collection into a clean container is required for the test. When there is no monoclonal immunoglobulin in the urine, the results are normal. The urine typically contains relatively little protein. However, the presence of this specific protein raises the possibility of some cancers, such as multiple myeloma (a plasma cell overgrowth that causes a number of infections and weak bones).
