The blood test Hepatitis B Core Antigen Total, sometimes called Anti-HBc or HBcAb Total, is used to identify both acute and long-term Hepatitis B viral infections. The tests check for many indicators of infection, including Hepatitis B DNA, which is the viruss genes and proves its presence, as well as Antigens produced by viruses, Antibodies produced by the body to fight the infection, and others. The test finds both Hepatitis IgM and IgG antibodies as well as the Hepatitis B core antigen. The core antibody will not be present in the blood of those who received the Hepatitis B vaccine.
