Antiphospholipid antibodies known as lupus anticoagulants (LA) target the bodys own immune system and healthy cells. They are known to produce antiphosholipid syndrome (APS), which results in frequent and unnatural blood clots, by attacking the phospholipids in the cell membrane. As a result, blood clots may develop in the limbs, legs, heart, lungs, stomach, and kidney, among other bodily areas. APS can lead to a number of consequences, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, renal failure, and lung damage, depending on the organ where the blood clot has lodged.
