This test looks for the aberrant haemoglobin that causes sickle cell disease. An individual with sickle cell disease has two haemoglobin S genes that are defective. Only one of these faulty genes and none or very minor symptoms are present in a person with sickle cell trait. The difference between these two circumstances cannot be determined by this test. Hemoglobin electrophoresis is a different test used to identify a persons condition.
