The catecholamines epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine are broken down into the two metanephrines, metanephrine and normetanephrine, which are their breakdown products (metabolites). Metanephrine and normetanephrine levels in the blood are determined using the plasma free metanephrines test.
