The test determines the stool pH, which is influenced by the fermentation of carbohydrates. A number of medical issues are predicted using the test. Extremely acidic stools are a sign of infections, lactose intolerance, or bacterial overgrowth, among other disorders. The typical slightly acidic pH is caused by the fermentation of normal amounts of carbohydrate sugars and the formation of fatty acids. A slightly alkaline pH may be a sign of diarrheal secretion. A pH of 6 in the stool indicates sugar malabsorption. Additionally, colon cancer risk may be increased by high faecal pH.
