The hormone B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is produced by your heart. The same molecule that generates BNP also releases the inactive prohormone known as the N-terminal (NT)-pro hormone BNP (NT-proBNP). When the pressure inside the heart changes, BNP and NT-proBNP are both released. Heart failure and other cardiac issues may be related to these alterations. When heart failure develops or worsens the levels rise and when it is stable, levels fall. Most of the time, patients with heart failure have greater BNP and NT-proBNP levels than people with adequate heart function.
