Islet autoantibodies are immune system-produced proteins that have been connected to type 1 diabetes. One or more of these autoantibodies can be found in the blood through testing. Type 1 diabetes is characterised by a shortage of insulin as a result of autoimmune mechanisms that kill the pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. Islet autoantibodies can exist previous to the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, are typically present at the time of diagnosis and gradually disappear over the course of the next five to ten years after the diagnosis.
