Antibodies that target smooth muscle can be found in the blood using an anti-smooth muscle antibody (ASMA) test. An example of an autoantibody is a smooth muscle antibody (SMA). These antibodies target the tissues and cells of the body. The primary application of an ASMA test is to identify autoimmune hepatitis, a condition in which the immune system destroys the tissues of the liver. A test is required if any of the autoimmune hepatitis symptoms—including an enlarged liver, discomfort over the liver, stomach pain, dark urine, and skin rashes—appear.
