When the body has an acid-base or electrolyte imbalance, this test is performed. It calculates the concentration of sodium, potassium, and chloride in the urine. Because of the imbalance in sodium that can occur as a result of dehydration, aldosteronism, Addison's disease, Addison's syndrome, or diabetes insipidus, the urine is used to assess sodium levels. The imbalance of chloride is also seen in diabetic acidosis and cystic fibrosis. Kidney illness and diabetes are linked to potassium imbalance.
