About the Test

This test finds out how much 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) is in your urine. This acid is a waste product that comes from the breakdown of serotonin by the liver. Serotonin is a hormone that plays a role in transmitting nerve impulses. It also affects the sleep and mood. Body normally gets rid of 5-HIAA via urine. 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) is the primary breakdown product (metabolite) of serotonin, a chemical substance (neurotransmitter) that transmits messages between nerve cells. This test measures the amount of 5-HIAA in the urine.

Collecting blood from an artery is more painful than collecting from a vein, but complications are rare. You may have some bleeding, bruising, or soreness at the spot where the needle was put in. Also, you should avoid lifting heavy objects for 24 hours after the test."
