A picornavirus called the hepatitis A virus (HAV) mostly spreads through the fecal-oral pathway. IgM antibody normally peaks within the first month of sickness, becomes undetectable after six months of infection, and is usually detectable within five to ten days of the beginning of symptoms. IgM antibodies to HAV are diagnostic for an acute HAV infection. Total anti-HAV testing is positive and suggests immunity to HAV infection, but it cannot distinguish between active and resolved HAV infection.
