Gastrointestinal infections can present commonly as diarrhoea or dysentery. Commonest symptom is change in frequency and consistency of stool. In dysentery in addition blood or mucus is present. These infections are often caused by bacteria but can also be caused by virus, fungi and parasites. This test cultures stool samples of the patient to identify the causative bacterium and also to establish as to which antibiotic can be used to treat the infection.
