About the Test

DHEAS is a steroid hormone which is produced by your adrenal glands. DHEAS levels typically reach their peak around adolescence and subsequently fall as people age. DHEAS is converted by your body into estrogen and androgens (including testosterone and androstenedione) While females produce more estrogen, males produce more testosterone. Women who produce excessive amounts of DHEAS may experience PCOS or other conditions including facial hair. Males with elevated DHEAS levels could begin puberty too early. Your sex drive and reproductive health too may be impacted by DHEAS levels.

Are there any associated risks with a blood test?

"There is very minimal risk with having a finger prick test or venipuncture. During venipuncture, you may have slight pain or bruising at the spot where the needle was put in, but most symptoms go away quickly.
Collecting blood from an artery is more painful than collecting from a vein, but complications are rare. You may have some bleeding, bruising, or soreness at the spot where the needle was put in. Also, you should avoid lifting heavy objects for 24 hours after the test."
