Unconjugated estriol (uE3) is a type of oestrogen (hormone) that is created by the metabolism of the foetus (unborn child). Babies' estriol levels are used to identify chromosomal abnormalities and birth disorders. Estriol, which is assessed as unconjugated uE3, is expelled from the placenta, an organ that serves as the fetus's protective covering. The main purpose of this test is to identify Down syndrome.
