A hormone called calcitonin aids in controlling how the body utilises calcium. It is created by unique thyroid cells known as C-cells. At the base of the neck, there is a little gland called the thyroid that resembles a butterfly. In addition to calcitonin, the thyroid also generates other hormones that affect metabolism, principally thyroxine (T4) and a little amount of triiodothyronine (T3). Calcitonin is produced in excess in two uncommon disorders, C-cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The blood level of calcitonin is measured by the test, which can be used to identify and keep an eye on certain disorders.
