The 24-hour urinary aldosterone excretion test or aldosterone test examines the amount of aldosterone excreted in the urine throughout 24 hours. Aldosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland that assists the kidneys in maintaining a proper balance of salt, water, and potassium. Aldosterone measurement is used in the investigation of patients with arterial hypertension and cases of primary and secondary aldosteronism. Urinary aldosterone levels are inversely correlated with urinary sodium excretion. In normal cases, there are decreased urinary aldosterone levels with adequate sodium retention.
