MGIT is used to check the sensitivity of Acid-Fast Bacillus (AFB) or mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB), to different types of antibiotics. This test determines whether or not TB bacteria will grow in the presence of antibiotics; 1st line drugs - namely streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampicin, and ethambutol or 2nd line drugs - namely levofloxacin, moxifloxacin and bedaquiline. This helps identify a suitable antibiotic that can be prescribed for the TB patient as antibiotic resistance is very common with some of the species of mycobacteria. This panel ensures effective treatment for patients who are suffering from TB and helps minimize the spread of TB.
