Lipid Profile is a blood test that measures the amount of fat molecules called lipids in your blood. High levels of lipids increase your risk of developing cardiovascular conditions or worsening pre-existing ones. This test is usually done to determine under which category does your cholesterol level fall and to monitor disease progression/treatment effectiveness. Obesity, cigarette smoking, chronic health conditions like hypertension & diabetes etc are reasons this test might be required. Apolipoproteins are the major protein component of lipoproteins (whose function is to transport lipids), and are important in maintaining the structural integrity and solubility of lipoproteins. Apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B are used alongside other routine lipid tests to help determine an individual’s risk of developing CVD - not as a general population screen but rather where patients have a family history of heart disease &/or hyperlipidemia to help determine the cause.
