5 ways to help kids practice mindfulness

Mindfulness has helped adults a lot in taking less stress and helped in improving mood. Wouldn’t it be great if the same benefits can be transferred to children as well? Asking your kids to join a meditation class might isn’t a great idea. Because children don’t suffer from the kind of problems which adults have to go through on a daily basis. Mindfulness is basically having a great presence of mind, for children to identify their emotions, which can help them to cope with situations.

1.Doing a breathing exercise
Handling children might be challenging occasionally, but if you are an expert it's not that difficult as it seems. Children might find it uncool for sitting and doing breathing exercises a bit odious. Breathing exercises can be really helpful for adults and children for improving concentration. Find a calm place, for sitting and doing proper inhaling and exhaling. It helps internally as well as externally and plays an instrumental role for a good breath.

2.Rehearsing with a companion
People love to mingle with those who share similar views, thoughts, and perspectives on various aspects. Similarly, children too enjoy doing practice with cousins or friends. Additionally, provide a stuffed animal to them. If you allow a spacious room, let children lie down on the floor. Tell them to do breathing exercises with friends and to closely observe and other sensations. The presence of a companion makes the environment and session friendly and to see how playful activity can be.

3.Healthy Diet
Another way to inculcate good habits is by developing a sense of good food right from an early age. Give them healthy food like Upma, Palak Paneer Rice, or Khichdi which are very nutritious and help them physically and instruct them to chew it. Kids will start noticing the textures and tastes which they've never experienced before.

4.Teach them gratitude
Gratitude is a cornerstone of mindfulness, teaching our kids to acknowledge the privilege they have in their lives. Additionally, include all your family members to write out things they are extremely grateful for. Furthermore, it can broaden their perspective towards life and make them realize how beautiful it is.

5.Draw a Daily Object
Give your child an ordinary object, like rock or paper. Instruct them to hold it in their hands and carefully observe it. Although this process might be tricky and children may get easily distracted it works wonders. Furthermore, instruct them to draw the object and see how they can channelize their inner illustrator, sketch artist and how this talent can help them in the long run.

Remember, to keep the session interesting and interactive. These exercises can help your child and can shape them up mentally and physically. It might take time for parents and teachers depending on the grasping speed of every child. However, things will change if you keep the narrative a simple one and teach them life lessons in a very entertaining way and give them examples of great people, and make them able to keep up with the pace of the world.
